Still struggling with amnesia, Ella questions everything she’s known about Kayden Wilkens—the alluring stranger who claims to have found her unconscious in an alleyway a month earlier. But was he truly a stranger—or did Kayden know her before his supposed rescue? Tormented by the potential betrayal he denies, with fleeting memories of a bombshell in her recent past, Ella must face a hard reality. Every action has consequences . . . and trusting Kayden, the one thing she most desires, might result in the direst consequences of all.

Excerpt

Crossing behind the couch toward the kitchen, I find myself remembering those naked, intimate moments with Kayden only a short time ago. The passion. The trust I’d felt for him. And then his words: “We both want more. Until we don’t.” The words send a surge of adrenaline and nerves through my body.

The scent of freshly brewed coffee teases my nostrils as I reach the kitchen, where I immediately find Kayden standing behind the island. But it’s not him that makes my heart lurch, as usual. It’s my gun that’s lying on the counter between us.

And when I should perhaps step backward I find myself charging forward to claim the other side of the counter.

“What is that for?”

“You thought you needed it earlier,” he says. “I want you to have it now.”

My fingers curl on the tiled counter. “Do I need it?”

“That’s for you to decide.”

“That isn’t the answer I want.”

His jaw sets hard. “If you’re expecting an answer you’ll want, you’d better pick up that gun.”

We stare at each other, a push and pull between us that has nothing to do with fear or intimidation, and everything to do with a bond we both know is being tested. “I know what you’re doing.”

“What am I doing?”

“The same thing you did outside that church, when you helped me hold the gun to your chest.”

“Which is what?”

“Offering me the façade of control.”

“You holding a loaded gun on me in no way equals a façade.”

“I know you now,” I counter. “You don’t give up control, even when you say you are.”

He rests his hands on the counter, one turned just enough for me to catch a glimpse of the hawk inked on his wrist, its wings spread, the mark of a man whose rules of many must dictate his actions. “There are two sides to this coin,” he says, his words drawing my attention, his pale blue eyes piercing mine. “The me with you, and the me with everyone else.”

“We barely knew each other at the church.”

“I’d already decided you were mine. You just didn’t know it yet.”

When Rowan Hunter begins to suffer from a bout of the proverbial writer’s block, his editor offers up his beach cottage in Martha’s Vineyard. Prepared to relax, unwind and pray that the words begin to flow again, he gets an unexpected surprise one evening.

To the world she is known as the eccentric jazz singer Sapphire Woods. But to the small town of Oak Bluffs, Massachusetts on the Vineyard, she is simply Laurel Asher, their best kept secret. In need of some time out of the spotlight to work on her next album, Laurel goes to the one place that’s always been home.

Thanks to a misunderstanding Laurel and Rowan end up under the same roof. As the house has more than enough room, they decide to share the place. But what neither of them expects is the sensual attraction that begins to build up.

As the color of the leaves begin to change and fall to the ground, these two find themselves falling as well–for each other.

Cover ArtEXCERPT
Rowan breathed in and out deeply as he ran down the beach for his evening jog. There was something different…more peaceful getting his daily exercise done on the beach. Back in the city when he ran, the city smells of gas exhaust surrounded him, now he was taking in the salty sea air. Instead of listening to his music to block out the sounds of grumpy people and horns blaring in traffic, he was able to leave his headphones back at the house and just enjoy the sound of the waves crashing on the shore.
He’d been in Martha’s Vineyard for almost two weeks now and he’d fallen in love with the place. He could imagine staying there forever. It was as if time slowed down, even stood still out on the island. Especially since the vacation season had passed. He’d arrived at the perfect time and thank his lucky stars he’d even been able to write a little. It wasn’t much yet, but it was better than nothing.
He’d done as Harry asked and called to let him know when he’d arrived at the island. Harry told him, again, to make himself at home and take as much time as he needed using the house.
He’d spent the first few days exploring. His ego got a little boost by how many people recognized him and asked for his autograph or wanted their picture taken with him. But they weren’t over the top about his recognition, which he appreciated. The town of Oak Bluffs was low key and laid back.
Rowan made his way back to the house, waving and speaking to the few people along the beach, out for an evening stroll. Once he was on the porch he stomped his shoes, getting the sand off of them before he walked into the house. After he felt like he wouldn’t leave a trail of sand in the house, he went in through the kitchen entrance off the side of the house.
He went straight for the fridge, grabbed a bottle of water out and drank it down in a few gulps. He grabbed the hoodie he’d worn to fight off the evening chill and was about to pull it over his head and start for the shower when he heard a click behind him.
His pulse began to quicken, recognizing the distinct sound of a gun being cocked.
“Don’t move.”
He raised an eyebrow and felt something further south raise as well. He hadn’t expected the person he was sure had a gun pointed at the back of his head to have a voice so silky, so smooth and so damned arousing.
You could very well be shot right now, he told himself, and you’re turned on by the sound of your possible killer’s voice.
He shook his head as a chuckle slipped out.
“I said don’t move,” she said, more firmly.
“Hey,” he said, calmly. “There must be some kind of mistake.”
He was about to speak again, when he heard the sound of a low menacing growl.
Great, she has an attack dog too.
“You’ve got five seconds to explain what the hell you’re doing in my house.”
“Your house?”
“Yes, this is my home. And you’re trespassing.”
“I’m not trespassing…can I at least turn around?” he asked.
He could sense her hesitation. Finally she said, “Slowly, with your hands up.”
He did as he was told and for a brief second he thought he might have already died and gone to heaven. The woman in front of him looked like an angel, with her big halo of tight curls spiraling around her face and across her shoulders.
She stood there, gun pointed at him with her feet braced firmly apart ready to pull the trigger if he so much as blinked wrong. And beside her was a bullmastiff standing tall and looking ready to defend its mistress. The dog was so massive, he stopped above the woman’s waist. He wondered if she walked or rode the huge animal.
“I’m not trespassing,” he repeated. “I was invited.”
“By whom?” she demanded.
“Harry Asher.”
He could tell by the look on her face that she recognized the name. She took one hand off of the gun and reached into her pocket.
“Don’t move,” she said again, as she pulled out a phone. She dialed a number and put the phone on speaker.
“Lolo! How are you, my girl?”
Rowan instantly recognized Harry’s voice. He would have breathed a sigh of relief, but he didn’t feel like he was in the clear yet.
“Uncle Harry?” she said, her voice full of apprehension. “Is someone staying at the beach house?”
“Yes, I sent one of my clients out there. He needed somewhere he could write in peace. I didn’t tell you since you’ve been out in L.A. for a while.”
“Well, I’m not in L.A. anymore,” she mumbled.
“You’re not? Wait…are you at the beach house?”
“Yes, I’m at the beach house.”
Harry must have heard something in her tone, because suddenly his voice was frantic as he said, “Christ Laurel! Put the gun down.”
Clearly Harry knew his niece well. What was probably more accurate was he’d taught his niece well.
She instantly dropped the gun to her side.
“Coltrane!” Harry said next. “Stand down boy.”
The once intimidating dog, whimpered, tucked his head and laid down at Laurel’s feet.
“Hunter? Are you okay?”
Rowan removed the hoodie from his head and watched as Laurel’s eyes grew wide with recognition.
“I’m fine Harry,” Rowan said. “But thanks for helping get things cleared up.”
“No problem. How’s the writing going?”
“It’s getting better.”
“Good. I’ve got a dinner meeting so I will let the two of you hash the rest of this out yourselves. Oh and Lolo?”
“Yes, Uncle Harry.”
“Put my gun back. And apologize,” he ordered, before hanging up the phone.
Laurel slid her phone back in her pocket and glanced up at Rowan.
“I really am sorry,” she said quietly, looking embarrassed.
Rowan grinned at her and said, “You were protecting what was yours, right? I’m just glad we got things worked out before you actually used that thing.”
“It’s just that sometimes squatters try and stay in the vacation homes in the off season.”
“You don’t have to explain anymore. But how about we do some proper introductions,” he said, walking toward her.
He held his hand out to her. “I’m–”
“Rowan Hunter,” she said, slipping her hand into his.
He looked at her with a raised eyebrow.
“I recognized you after you took your hood off,” she said, sheepishly.
“Next thing you’re going to tell me is you’ve read all of my books and you’re a huge fan,” he teased.
He watched the corner of her mouth tilt upward as she said, “Your headshot in your books doesn’t do you justice. You’re much more handsome in person.”
“Is that a fact?”
She smiled again and pulled her hand away from his. “I’m Laurel,” she said.
“Harry talks about you all of the time,” Rowan informed her.
“He probably exaggerates,” she said, rolling her eyes.
“And who is the behemoth?” he asked, although he’d already heard Harry called the dog by his name.
“This is Coltrane,” she answered.
“Interesting name. Hey, there Coltrane.”
At the sound of his name, Coltrane barked and stood on his hind legs. Rowan held his hand out and Coltrane sniffed it for a second. Once the dog decided he wasn’t a threat after all, Coltrane swiped his large tongue across Rowan’s hand.
“Well,” he said, trying shake the slobber off of his hand, “it’s nice to meet you too, Coltrane.”
He looked up at Laurel and grinned. “And it’s nice to meet you, Laurel, despite the circumstances.”
She hung her head, blushing again. “You have to let me find a way to make it up to you.”
“That’s not necessary–”
“I insist,” she interrupted. “I just got in, so I’m feeling kind of gritty from the plane ride. So how about we get cleaned up and then we can go out for dinner. My treat.”
“Okay,” he relented. “I’m in the master bedroom, if that’s where you stay I can get my stuff and go upstairs to shower.”
“Don’t worry about it,” she said. “The second story suite is my favorite spot anyway.”
He nodded then they turned in opposite directions to head for their bedrooms.

She tells herself he’s just a friend, but in her heart he’s so much more…
Matteo Valente is an up-and-coming filmmaker whose award-winning documentary put him on the map two short years ago. The cage of the grocery cart rattled on wobbly wheels as he slowly pushed it up one aisle and down another. Jackson wasn’t much of a cook but he could make easy dishes if the directions were clear. He loved those one box meals– pour it in a pan, shove it in the oven. Warm up some rolls and there you have it. It was nothing fancy, but it was dinner. And if he couldn’t stop by a Taqueria in the middle of the night and get a burrito, the least he could do was have something easy to make and warm up when he got home.

It was going to be a long year.

The store was virtually empty; a few cashiers, an overnight manager who didn’t even look up when he walked past the Customer Service counter, stock boys refilling shelves and maintenance gliding over the floors with dust mops, emptying garbage cans, washing windows. It seemed like a peaceful job, if you were a night owl. Not a lot of people around to bug you, pretty much the same deal, night after night after night. Maybe, when he was done with all of this music industry business, he could retire and work at a grocery store, and work overnights, and make it his job to see that the windows sparkled, and the floors were clean, and the shelves were stocked.

Yeah, right.

Jackson heard the front doors slide open and then close again. Someone else liked shopping at 4 AM, it seemed. He’d made his way around most of the store, his cart only half full of boxed food, cereal, milk and bottled water. He stopped at the vitamin section, overwhelmed with all of his choices—One-A-Day for Men, One-A-Day for Energy, Vitamins added C, D, and E…
He pushed his cart, steering it toward the next aisle. With a loud rattle and the vibrant clang of steel on steel, he collided with something he couldn’t see around the bend.

“Sorry, sorry. My fault.”

“It’s okay,” said a female voice from around the corner. “I’m sort of not paying attention, either.”

His cart wouldn’t pull back for some reason, no matter how hard he pulled, so he had to walk around and inspect the wheels. As he expected, he’d rammed the other cart so hard that the wheels rode up and got caught in the rungs at the bottom of the other cart. The harder he pulled, the more he was melding them together.

“Uhm. Our carts seem to be uh… intertwined, here.” Jackson bent and pushed and pulled and tipped and twisted, and finally they came apart, rolling away like they couldn’t stand to be near each other.

“Thanks. Sorry, I guess I wasn’t looking where I was going.”

Jackson stood, wiping oil and dirt off of his hands onto his jeans, reaching out for his cart before it knocked boxes off of the shelves. He redirected it and lifted raised his face to hers. “No problem. It was my fault, anyway.”

She smiled back and for a millisecond everything was fine. And then he saw it, in her eyes. Recognition. That look that women got when they realized who was standing in front of them, that split second of trying to decide if they should freak out or play it cool, say something or let it go, ask for a picture or an autograph and a serenade, or respect his privacy.

“Well, it was nice running into you,” she said, her smile a little wider.  She had a dimple. It was cute. She was cute, despite a half up, half down messy pony tail and an inside out t-shirt. Her eyes were red-rimmed, though and she looked tired. “Maybe we’ll do it again sometime.” She was going with playing it cool. Good choice.

“Sure,” he said with a chuckle. “Anytime you’re out shopping at five in the morning, I’m game.”

“It’s a date. Well… I’ll let you get back to your… shopping.”

He watched her back up and steer her cart around him, on her own trek through the store. He might be missing Kim but he was still a man with a libido and still knew what a pretty woman looked like. He could only imagine how she looked when she tried.
He poked his head around an end cap that boasted 50% off of Flintstone Vitamins, Bayer Aspirin, and Calamine lotion and watched her walk toward the frozen food section. His eyes fixed on two perfectly formed cheeks, hugged and outlined by the fabric of her yoga pants as they moved with her slow, sexy sway across the dull linoleum. His eyes roved up her body quickly before she could move out of his line of sight to her thin waist, slight shoulders and long neck. He wished he’d paid more attention to the front of her, but the back of her wasn’t a bad view at all.

She turned her head as she was about to go down an aisle. He quickly ducked back behind the end cap. Flushed and embarrassed, he pulled his cart down his own aisle and headed toward checkout. Praying she hadn’t seen him leering at her like a creepy old man.

But afraid that she had.

Review: Love Reality by Nana Malone

Screen Shot 2015-03-21 at 20.29.45Nana Malone‘s Love Reality is the second book in her The Donovans series and it’s a fun, sexy read. The book revolves around my favourite hate object–reality dating shows–and what happens when two rival dating bloggers end up as contestants on the show. Mia, whose blog Lonely Girl is gaining success, is cast as Cinderella for the show while Ryan, whose blog Single Guy teaches men how to woo women with romantic games, is snared as one of the Prince Charmings set to win Mia’s heart reality TV style. There just one catch: they know each other already. Mia thinks she hates Ryan. Ryan’s only agreed to be on the show to write an exposé. But one thing goes without denying–the chemistry between them is smoking hot.

Love Reality is a great page turner that’s funny and sexy with characters whose backstory pulls you in. Though you think you’re going to hate Ryan, you end up developing a bit of a crush on him. And Mia’s past as a foster child and how it still affects her makes her an interesting character study.

Lots of sexy scenes and oodles of chemistry, so perfect for people who like their romance extra hot.

Blog Tour: Midwife to Destiny by Nana Prah

Midwife to Destiny

Destiny Series, Book 1
Contemporary Romance, Multicultural
Midwife to Destiny Dream Cast

I’d be ecstatic to have my latest release, Midwife
to Destiny, turned into a movie. Let me take it a step further and make it into
a series. Since its set in a hospital, it’s not a huge stretch of my
imagination. So much drama, so many episodes. Who would I have as my dream
cast?
To be fair to book two in the series,
Destiny Mine, which features the sassy Esi and arrogant Adam, I’ll only focus
on the hero and heroine for Midwife to Destiny, Ora and Jason.

BLURB:
Ghanaian nurse Aurora ‘Ora’ Aikins never expected to find the love of her life while on vacation in South Africa. Engaged to another and believing that love has no place in her life, she returns to Ghana, and puts duty and honor first.
Three years later, Dr. Jason Lartey still can’t get Ora out of his mind or his heart. After learning she never married, he takes a risk and moves to Ghana hoping to rekindle what they started. His sudden appearance in Ora’s Emergency Department sends sparks flying all over again.
They’re in the same country, working in the same hospital, and together but distance creeps between them. Can they make their destined love one for the ages?

At ten past seven, Jason strode through the door of McDonald’s. What the hell had
brought him here? Staying away from her proved impossible. He’d been sure when
he woke up in the morning that this fascination with her would have dissipated.
It hadn’t.
He spotted her sitting in a booth and his step faltered. Her beauty overwhelmed
him. Today, her shoulder-length, straight hair framed her heart-shaped face.
Her almond-shaped, hazel eyes drew him to her like a black hole vortex. His
life would never be the same again after knowing her.
“Hi. Sorry I’m late,” he said.
Ora smiled and his heart flipped over. He tapped his chest with a fist and
dismissed it as indigestion.
“I can forgive you for being ten minutes late.”
“How’s your wrist this morning?”
“A little sore, but the swelling has decreased. I didn’t need to wear the bandage
today.”
The need to touch her again burned through him. “Let me take a look.”
She extended her arm. Just as it had been in the hospital, the contact of her warm,
smooth skin sent little shock waves into his fingers to course up his arm. His
reaction to her, both in the physical and, as much as he hated to admit it,
emotional sense, had confused him when they met. Early in his career, he’d
learned to detach himself from patients and deal with them on a professional
level, but not with Ora. With nothing more than her presence, she’d broken
through his clinical coolness.

Guest Post: Claire Duffy & Life Is Swede Day on 21 February

A few months ago, a colleague told me about a blog I had to read–and I was hooked from Day One. That blog belonged to Claire Duffy, who is our guest blogger today at Kim Talks Books.

For six months last year, I blogged as a fictional character.  The idea – inspired by Orson Welles’ War of the Worlds – was to create a fictional world that initially appeared authentic, so that people could step right in, interact with the characters, and almost become part of the story themselves.  I’ve always been fascinated with that concept: who wouldn’t want to enter a novel they’re reading, ask questions or give a character a few home truths?

When I moved to Stockholm and the story of a lonely ex pat who gets drawn into a murder mystery began to form in my brain, I knew I’d found my War of the Worlds.  It felt organic: of course Regan would blog daily about her impressions and experiences struggling to settle into her new life.  Within weeks, she had built a fantastic, loyal following, who advised and supported her through culture clashes and the language barrier, a rough patch with Anders and her struggles dealing with his apparently cold and reserved friends.

Regan’s early accounts of being an ex pat in Stockholm are extremely autobiographical: one of my friends only clicked that it was fiction when she realized how much of what happened to Regan had happened to me. I love living in Stockholm, and love Swedish people – but my first year or so was definitely a struggle against loneliness, homesickness and frustration.

I remember at times feeling that I couldn’t read people any more – often I would meet someone and diagnose that they had no interest in being friends with me, then later discover that they were just being Swedishly reserved upon first meeting. For me it was just a case of getting to know and understand a new culture, but, but it was a ripe emotional state to toss a little murder into!  When one of Anders’ close friends is murdered and he is arrested, Regan sets out to clear his name – but unable to trust her perception of the people involved, unable to understand what she hears, it’s easier said than done!

Now that the final blog has been posted, the whole project has been put together into an ebook.

Friday 21 February is Life is Swede day!!

The idea is to gather up all the fantastic support the blog has had over the last few months – and welcome some new friends into the fold – and see if we can get this little project that could onto the Amazon best seller list for a day*!

(*and also for the rest of all time. But you know, one step at a time 😉 )

To pull this off, we need to spread the word as much as possible to everybody in the whole world (ideally) to buy Life is Swede on Friday 21 February. Join Regan’s Army and blog, share, re-post, tweet, like, submit, pin with abandon! There’s even a Facebook group you can join and add your friends to if you really want to go wild!

Anyone who:

* tweets, shares, mentions the project on any social media will get a thank you & link of their choice on www.lifeisswedeblog.com

* hosts my guest post about the project & plan (I’ll email it on request!) or adds friends to the event Facebook group will get a thank you & blog button displayed on www.lifeisswedeblog.com, plus I’ll tweet & share to the Facebook group a link of your choice.

* blogs about the project (the story, the concept, the plan!) or reviews the book on Amazon will get the button on www.lifeisswedeblog.com, plus a thank you and link on the last page of the book itself, and will go into the draw to be name-checked as one of Regan’s blog friends in the text of the book.

These are just the thank yous I could think up myself (and though my fuzzy, cold addled brain!) – if you have any thoughts or co promotion ideas, I am all ears!! I’ll be monitoring any activity of course, but please do give me a heads up if you are getting involved so that I can be sure to thank you!!

Snowbound is now live for NOOK, Kobo and iBooks!

Image, snowbound, coverYay! Snowbound is now available for Kobo, NOOK and iBooks Store via iTunes. Still waiting for word when it will be available via Sony Bookstore for the Sony reader, but at least my novel is available for more readers than just Kindle (even if Kindle is my reader of choice).

So now Snowbound is available for just about everyone and I couldn’t be happier. Now I just hope that everyone will enjoy reading it as much as I enjoyed writing it.

Coming soon? Another novel. I have a few in line, just waiting for final tweaks. 🙂

Happy reading (and writing) and thanks so much for all of your support!

Snowbound now available for Kindle

dfw-kg-sb-cover-2-smallJust a quickie to let you know that Snowbound is now available for Kindle! 😀

If you live in the US, get it here. UK readers can get it here.

Nook readers, you’ll have to wait a bit longer–around 2 weeks–since BN isn’t as quick about delivering. Not sure why.

You could always download the free Kindle app and read it on your tablet, phone or computer. 🙂

Hope you enjoy reading Snowbound! If you do, please write a review and/or drop a line and let me know.

Happy reading (and writing)!
