New Release: Positively Pippa by Sarah Hegger

Positively Pippa Banner

Positively Pippa_compFrom author Sarah Hegger comes an exciting new series set in small-town Utah, where secrets don’t keep for long—and love turns up in the most unexpected places.

For Pippa Turner there’s only one place to go when her life self-destructs on national TV—home to Ghost Falls, and her heavily perfumed, overly dramatic, but supremely loving grandmother, Philomene. If anyone will understand how Pippa’s hit makeover show was sabotaged by her vengeful ex, it’s Phi. But she’s not the only one who’s happy to see her—and Pippa can’t help but wonder if Matt Evans, her gorgeous high-school crush turned Phi’s contractor, is game for a steamy close-up…

Matt owes his whole career to Phi and her constant demands to embellish the gothically ridiculous house he built for her. Getting to see red-headed, red-hot Pippa is a bonus, especially now that she’s no longer the troublesome teenager he remembers. He’s willing to stay behind the scenes while she gives her own life a much-needed makeover, but not forever. As far as he’s concerned, their connection is too electric to ignore. And the chance to build something lasting between them—before she can high-tail it back to Hollywood—is going to the top of his to-do list.

Positively Pippa

Chapter 1

“Aren’t you—?”

“No.” Not anymore she wasn’t. Pippa snatched her boarding pass from the check-in attendant and tugged her baseball cap lower over her eyes. Couldn’t Kim Kardashian help a girl out and release another sex tape or something? Anything to get Pippa away from the social media lynch mob. She kept her head down until she found her gate, and chose the seat farthest away from the other passengers waiting to board the flight to Salt Lake City. Latest copy of Vogue blocking her face, she flipped through the glossy pages.

Peeping over the top of her magazine she slammed straight into the narrowed gaze of a woman three rows over. Shit! Pippa dropped the woman’s gaze and went back to Vivienne Westwood bucking the trend.

Across the airport lounge the woman’s glare beamed into the top of her head like those laser tracking things you saw in spy movies. Pippa buckled under the burn and slouched lower into her seat.

Look at that, Fendi was doing fabulous separates this season. And really, Ralph Lauren, that’s your idea of a plus-size model? Stuff like this made her job so much harder.

Her former job.

Losing her show still clawed at her. Losing? Like she’d left the damn thing at Starbucks as she picked up her morning latte. More like her jackass ex with zero conscience had knocked it out of her hand. Framed, stitched up, wrongfully accused—judged, found guilty, and sentenced to a plethora of public loathing wiping out all the years spent building her career. Burning sense of injustice aside, she was stuck in this thing until it went away.

Angry Woman lurked in her peripheral vision. As sweat slid down her sides, Pippa tucked her elbows in tight and risked another glance.

Under an iron-gray row of rigidly permed bangs, the woman’s mouth puckered up.

Back to Vogue. The knot in her stomach twisted tighter, and she checked her cap. What the hell? A baseball cap and shades always worked for other celebrities. Why not her?

Angry Woman squared her shoulders and huffed.

This could go one of two ways. Either Angry Woman would come over and give her a piece of her mind on behalf of women everywhere, or she’d confine her anger to vicious staring and muttering. Maybe some head shaking. Please don’t let her be a crusader for women. Please, please, please. After two weeks of glares, stares and condemnation, Pippa had gotten the message:

Pippa St. Amor, the woman America loves to hate.

Right now, all she wanted was to sneak home and stay there until someone else topped her scandal. God, didn’t Vogue have anything fresh? She’d make a list. Lists were good. Soothing. Item one, run away from Angry Woman and hide in the bathroom. Item two, get your career back. She moved item two up to first place, where it had been since she left home at eighteen, and gauged the distance between her and the bathroom door. She’d never make it.

Angry Woman lifted her phone and snapped a shot of Pippa.

Damn, she’d forgotten that option; this one by far the worst. God, she hated Twitter. And Facebook. And Instagram, and Snapchat, and whatever-the-hell new social torment site some asshat was thinking up right this minute. The ongoing public derision chipped off bits of her until she felt like an open nerve ending.

A friend huddled next to Angry Woman, long hair that was totally the wrong shade of brown and aged her by ten years at least. If Pippa had her on the show, Long Hair would be wearing a cute, hip cut, a fresh new makeup look, and mile-wide smile with her new sense of self.

The reveals never got old. There was something about a woman finally seeing her own beauty that made all the other crap that went with a television career worth it. Ray had ripped that away from her too.

Pippa was getting it with double barrels now. Lips tight, matching twin spots of outraged color staining their cheeks as they whispered over Angry Woman’s phone. They both wore mom jeans. Up until two weeks ago it had been her mission to deliver moms everywhere from jeans like that. Along with those nasty, out of shape T-shirts they sold in three-packs of meh colors that had no business existing on the color spectrum. Angry and Long Hair were so her demographic. They’d probably seen the original episode live and watched it over and over again on demand or something. Maybe even watching it right this minute on YouTube.

YouTube! She hated YouTube, too.

Why didn’t they call her flight already and get her the hell out of here?

You didn’t sleep with the boss, and especially not in television. For four years. Ray had always been a bit sneaky, but to annihilate her career to boost his own? She hadn’t seen it coming. But you couldn’t rely on a man. How did she not get this by now?

Three minutes until boarding.

“Excuse me?”

Ah, shit, shit, shit, double damned shit in a bucket. So close, two minutes and fifty-five seconds. Smile and look friendly. “Yes.”

Try not to look like you.

“You’re that woman, aren’t you?” Angry Woman narrowed her eyes, and Pippa leaned back in her chair, out of striking range.

“Hmm?”

“It is you.” Long Hair planted her legs akimbo like a prizefighter. “I watched every single one of your shows. I can’t believe you said those things, and I—”

Two minutes, thirty seconds.

“—should be ashamed of yourself. What you said is a crime against women everywhere. You made that poor woman cry.”

Of course they cried. They were supposed to cry. The shows were edited to make them cry even more, but not the time to point it out.

“Shocking. And cruel. You’re just a . . . a nasty bitch.” Angry Woman got the last word in. She’d been called worse. Recently, too, and it still stung.

A man in the row opposite turned to watch the action. The three teens beside him openly stared and giggled.

I didn’t say it, people. Okay, she’d said it, but not like that. Editing, people. Creative editing—the scourge and savior of television celebrities worldwide. She could shout it across LAX and it still wouldn’t do any good. Until the next scandal broke and hers was forgotten.

“This is a boarding call . . .”

Thank you, Jesus!

“I’m sorry, that’s my flight.” Pippa creaked a smile and gathered her things. Handbag, phone, iPad, and coat. Her hands shook under the combined weight of several sets of eyes and she nearly dropped her phone.

No cabin baggage, not on this flight. Nope, this flight she’d packed just about everything she owned into the two heaviest suitcases on the planet. Paid extra weight without an argument. Anything to get the hell out of LA and home to Philomene.

Phi would know what to do.

Prologue

Santana
Dr. Santana Kingsley sat on the bleachers, watching her son play soccer with the neighborhood kids. A smile washed over her face. She’d never been happier.
Dylan looked too cute, kicking the soccer ball down the field, running beside the other kids.
Santana’s eyes traveled over to where her girlfriend, Gina, stood. Gina smiled at her and then waved for her to come over.
She rose to her feet, descended the bleachers, and began making her way over. As she crossed the lawn, the hot sun burned her face. It was a great day to go to the pool. Perhaps she’d take Dylan for a swim—
A loud horn blasted the air.
Screams erupted.
Santana spun around and faced the commotion. Her heart dropped, twisting violently in her chest.
“Noooo!!!!” A tortuous screamed erupted from her lungs.
Dylan lay sprawled in the street in front of the car with the soccer ball beside him.
She took off running.
Fear and panic coursed through Santana’s veins as she plummeted to her knees, placing a finger on Dylan’s neck, checking for a pulse. There was a faint one.
The driver paced back and forth, gripping his head. “He just came out of nowhere and ran in front of the car! I’m sorry!”
“Is he dead?” someone asked.
“Who was supposed to be watching him?” another person asked.
Santana’s shoulders rocked violently as tears seeped from her eyes. “Someone please call 911!”
Terror gripped her. She pinched Dylan’s nose, covered his mouth with hers, and blew.
“Come on, Dylan. Breathe, baby. Please breathe,” she said, sobbing, administering chest compressions to his tiny body.
“Oh my God! Dylan!” the familiar voice screamed. She glanced up to find her husband glaring down at her. “What happened?!” Eric dropped to his knees beside her.
“I only took my eyes off him for one second.”
Tears made a burning trail down Eric’s jaws. “You were supposed to be watching him!” he barked, crying profusely.
Dizziness assailed her as she sobbed, painfully. She gathered Dylan in her arms, cradled him against her chest, and prayed harder than she ever had before.

Chapter One

Democratic Republic of Congo
many years later

Santana
Dr. Santana Kingsley sat in the front passenger seat of the opened window Jeep, taking in the view of the rain forest. Nervousness swarmed inside her veins, but the anticipation of providing medical care to the underserved people of Congo brought warmth to her inner being.
The nonprofit organization she was going to be working for—DEAR: Doctors Emergency Aid & Rescue—had a stellar reputation as to how they went about epidemics, conflicts, and disasters. And although she always dreamed of being a philanthropist, she knew she wouldn’t be here if her son—Dylan—hadn’t died.
The remembrance of her son dying in her arms after he’d been struck by a car made Santana shiver. She felt hollow and empty. If she would’ve been watching Dylan more carefully, he’d still be alive and her husband would’ve never divorced her, leaving her with nothing but an aching heart.
Santana stared at the powder blue sky. I miss you so much, Dylan. Mommy is so, so sorry. Deep regret filled her soul as she felt her eyes grow wet.
“It’s nice of you to come here, Doctor.” The sound of the African driver’s thick accent cut into her painful thoughts.
The Jeep rocked vigorously over the unpaved road. Santana gripped the handlebar to steady herself, hair whipping at her face. She transferred her gaze to the driver. “I’m glad to be here. Africa is so beautiful.” She swiped at the hair brushing her lips.
The male African driver gave Santana a despondent stare, then fixated his gaze back on the road ahead. Shaking his head negatively, he cleared his throat.
“The view you see now is indeed a pretty sight to see, but as we get farther into the east into Kinshasa, you’ll see it’s quite ugly. The sea is infected with garbage, dead animals, and human remains.” A harsh breath expelled from his dark lips. “My uncle died in the water, trying to escape the rebels.”
“The wars here are bad. The worst in the world.”
“Yep. They’re horrible. Here in the Congo…people are slaughtered for no good reason. We need your help, Doctor. Thank you for coming.”
God sent me here to restore my soul and to help others. “You don’t have to thank me. It’s my pleasure to be here. I’m looking forward to helping.” A short moment of silence passed. “How long will it be before we get to the DEAR house?” She was anxious to see where she’d be living.
“Not long. We’ll be arriving any minute now.” The driver pulled off the main road and drove into the forest. Tires crunching branches resounded in Santana’s ear. Where exactly was she going to be staying? In the jungle?
The driver cleared his throat. “Dr. LeBlanc takes great pride in his medical foundation—DEAR.” He smiled. “He’s a mighty good man. Us Congolese people have high regards for Dr. LeBlanc. We think he’s the best thing next to God. Out of the goodness of his heart he hired me, and now I’m able to buy food from the local market to feed my family.” He chuckled. “My wife and children can eat good food now because of the doctor. We finally getting some meat on our bones,” he said on a laugh.
Santana smiled at his fond words pertaining to Dr. LeBlanc. “I can’t wait to meet him. I’m looking forward to working for him.”
She reached into her purse for the DEAR brochure. On the cover was a nice photo of Dr. Sean LeBlanc. Dressed in a navy suit, he had gray hair, dark eyes, and looked to be around sixty years old. He’s such a handsome older man. From what she’d researched, the doctor had a stellar reputation and was a genius. Perhaps Dr. LeBlanc could teach her how to start up her own nonprofit humanitarian aid organization.
The Jeep came to a screeching halt. Sand whooshed up from the worn tires, stirring the air. “We’re here, Doc!” The driver flashed a wide grin.
Santana took in her surroundings. A white, tiny house made of sun baked bricks was centered dead smack in the middle of the forest. In the middle of…ummm…nowhere. Looking beyond the tall trees, she could see the mountains. This was her new home.
Immediately, she felt culture shock. She was going to be living in the actual jungle. In a tiny shack.
Anxious to meet Dr. LeBlanc, she opened the door and stepped onto the grass. Strong stenches of wildlife assaulted her nostrils. Her nose wrinkled.
The driver pulled her luggage from the trunk and came to stand beside her. “So what do you think of your new home?”
“It’s different. Real. Different.” This is going to take some getting used to, that’s for sure.
Shaking his head, he chuckled. “I’m sure it’s different all right,” he mocked, dragging her suitcase along the grass.
Santana followed him.
Suddenly, the front door of the shack cracked open and a handsome man appeared in the entryway. Tan complexioned and dark hair, he wore a white tank top and light denim jeans. Opening the screen door, he walked onto the porch.
Santana paused at the foot of the steps, glancing up at the fine man. He must be a servant of some sort. He’s gorgeous.
He offered her a gorgeous smile, causing her heart to do somersaults. Then he descended the staircase.
The hot sun beat down on his masculine face as he peered down at her, towering over her, making her feel short beneath his bold, domineering stance.
As her eyes glazed over him, lust crawled through Santana’s system. She swallowed. She was nearly melting like an icicle, and he hadn’t said one word yet. Body temperature rising, she tucked a pieced of hair behind her ear.
“Hi. I’m Dr. Sean LeBlanc,” he said in a husky voice, outstretching his hand.
Santana’s heart dipped. Dr. Who? What? Wait!
She was confused. When she grasped his calloused palm, warmth spread through her hand and up her arm before spreading through her chest like a wildfire.
“Hi. I’m Dr. Santana Kingsley.”
Sean’s eyes spread wide with shock. “You’re Dr. Santana Kingsley!” His voice pitched. She nodded. He ran his hand raggedly through his hair. “Apparently, there’s been a mix up. Your application stated that you were a man.”
“What? I’m not a man.”
Sean’s blue eyes gleamed. “Well, I can see that.” A baffling expression settled on his face. “I’m Dr. Sean LeBlanc,” he repeated, “the CEO of DEAR. And umm. I’m your new roommate.”
Santana’s heart dropped as a lump clogged her throat. And all of her bravado was shot straight to hell. There was no way in hell she could live with a man that looked like him!
What in the world was going on?
“I’m confused. The man on the brochure and the website had gray hair and was a much older man,” she said wearily. She pulled the DEAR brochure from her purse and held it up to his face.
Sean surveyed the brochure. “That’s my father. He’s the founder of DEAR and just recently retired. I’ve been running the organization for the last couple of months now.”
Santana’s heart lurched with strained excitement. Working with an old man that had wrinkly skin was one thing, but how in the world was she supposed to work with a man as fine as Sean? Heat rushed through her body. She wanted to blame it on the temperature outside and not some man she’d just met, but then she’d only be lying to herself if she did. Guys like Sean could be more vicious than the war in Congo itself.
“I’ll take it from here,” Sean told the driver.
The driver released the handle of the luggage. “Have a good day, Dr. LeBlanc. Nice meeting you, Doctor.” He walked away.
Her roommate is a man, her mind screamed. “Wait! Am I staying here? Isn’t there a hotel room somewhere around here?”
“Sorry. You’re stuck with me. Now let’s get out of this heat and go inside where it’s cooler.” Sean hefted her suitcase and climbed up the steps. The door creaked when Sean opened it. “Ladies first,” he said, stepping to the side.
Santana entered the quaint homestead. Sliding her hands into her jean pockets, she surveyed the inside. Stone floors, white walls and two bedrooms, the DEAR house was tinier than her apartment back home. But it was spotless, especially for a man.
Sean shut the door. His tall, domineering presence standing behind her caused her heartbeat to spike. “With time, you’ll get used to it.”
When she glanced over her shoulder, their gazes linked. Tingles spread through her bones. “Used to what?”
His powerful presence completely unraveled her. She swallowed.
“Your reduced living standards. It’s quite different than living in a big city like Chicago.”
“Yes, it’s very different.”
“I’ll show you to your room.” Rolling her luggage behind him, he strode into the den and then into the bedroom on the left. Inside was a full-sized bed and a dresser. “I know it’s not much, but—”
“It’s plenty,” she said. “Thank you.”
“For what?”
“For hiring me.”
His lips drew back into a handsome grin. “Don’t thank me just yet. Wait until after you actually start.”
“Why so?”
“Working in the Congo is extremely hard work. Many doctors that come here don’t make it past two weeks before they end up quitting.”
After what she’d been through with losing her son and husband, she felt she could handle anything. “I’m tough. I’m sure I can handle it.”
Sean’s gorgeous blue eyes roamed up and down her body. “Tough, huh?”
“Yeah. Tough.”
“No offense, but you don’t look like you have one tough bone in your body.”
She bet he had a tough bone in his though. “I’m tougher than I look,” she said, folding her arms across her chest.
“For your sake and mine, I hope you are, because the Congo is in dire need of strong doctors. Are you tired from traveling?”
“No. I slept a lot on the plane.”
“Well, if you’re up to it, I’d like to show you one of our nearby clinics.”
“I’m up to it.”
“Good, I’ll be right back, going to get my medicine bag. Oh yeah, there’s a white DEAR shirt in the closet. Thinking that you were a man, my administrators ordered a size large, so it’ll be big on you. I’ll order another one for you tomorrow.” He walked away.
Santana opened the closet to find several white DEAR shirts hanging. She removed her clothing, pulled the shirt from the hangar, and then slipped it over her head.
My new roommate, huh? How in the hell had this happened? Santana flopped down on the mattress to find it hard. Yikes! The bed was in need of a mattress pad bad. She reached into her purse for a brush. As she began detangling her hair, she spotted Sean in her peripheral vision, standing beyond the doorway, staring at her.
Oh snap.
Pretending as if she didn’t see him, she unzipped her suitcase, pulled out a mirror and hooked it to the nail on the wall. Just as she looked into the mirror, Sean entered and their gazes hooked. Her heart took a perilous leap.
From a looks point of view, Sean was everything she’d want in a man. If she was looking for one. But she wasn’t. After her husband had divorced her, she’d vowed to never remarry, and she planned on honoring that vow.
Santana slowly turned around, her gaze instinctively reconnecting with Sean’s. Like wires on a computer, electricity shot to her sex and her labia quivered.
She shook her head, hoping to shake off whatever it was she was feeling for him—her boss. Get it together, Santana.
She had to get a freaking grip. Like yesterday.
“Are you ready?” Sean asked, huskily.
“Yes,” she said, trying to tamper down her inclined pulse rate.
“After I show you the clinic, we’ll head to one of the villages. It’s about twelve miles from here.”
She grabbed her medical bag from her suitcase, strapping it over her shoulder. “I’m ready when you are.”
“Let’s go, Doc.” When he’d called her Doc, it had such an affectionate undertone to it.
Santana descended the porch behind Sean and headed towards the white SUV parked beneath the tree. The word DEAR was written in red, bold letters on the side of the vehicle. As she crossed the front yard towards the SUV, her eyes skimmed over Sean’s firm butt. Nice, hard ass. She smiled.
She climbed inside the truck, buckled her seatbelt, and the SUV drove even deeper into the east of Congo—a war-stricken country.

Blurb

From the New York Times bestselling authors of Stuck-Up Suit and Cocky Bastard, comes a sexy new standalone novel.

Money or love? Which would you choose?

You probably just answered the question in your head thinking it’s an easy decision.

For me, it’s not. Did I mention it’s a lot of money? A hell of a lot.

I needed to go far away to think it through.

As I embarked on an impulsive trip, I hit a detour when I met sexy Carter in the airport lounge. We struck up a heated conversation.

Then, he left.

I thought I’d never see him again.

But fate had other plans.

Surprise! He was the pilot of my flight.

The bigger surprise was the adventure that followed after the plane landed.

Carter was dangerous and always on the move.

Even though our connection was magnetic, I knew it was only temporary.

He would give me tickets, and I would follow him around the world to exotic places.

A bevy of flight attendant exes and rumors about Carter’s reputation were never far behind.

I didn’t know what to believe.

But I was addicted. Nothing else mattered anymore. And I was going to get hurt. Because a part of me wanted to be the one to finally ground the playboy pilot.

At the very least, he was taking me on a thrilling ride.

All good things must come to an end, right?

Except our ending was one I didn’t see coming.

“Carter? What are you doing?”

Shit.

I laughed under my breath and banged the back of my head against the wood. “Praying?”

“Do you always breathe like that when you’re praying?”

“It’s an intense prayer.”

“What are you really doing?”

“I think you might know what I’m really doing, Kendall.”

“Can I come in?”

Still fully erect, I tucked my cock back into my pants as best I could before opening the door.

Her eyes trailed down to my massive erection. “I’m sorry….to make you resort to that.”

“It’s okay. My hand and I haven’t spent time like this since I was a teenager. I think he missed me.”

“What were you thinking about?”

“You.”
“Yeah…but what specifically?”

“It was this fantasy of fucking you on the dance floor back at the club.”

She looked down at me again. Her expression was serious when she asked, “You need some help?”

“I thought you said we weren’t going to go there.”

“I can’t have sex with you. But I want to touch you. I could take my clothes off, let you finish what you started. You know…help you.”

Looking up at the ceiling, I shook my head. “You have no fucking clue, do you?”

“What do you mean?”

“How crazy you make me. There’s no halfway with you. Jerking off with your naked body right in front of me…not being able to do what I really want to you…would be torture. I don’t have that kind of willpower, not with you, not anymore. Even when I kiss you, all I can think about is burying myself inside of you. But you naked in front of me? Too much, Kendall. When you strip down for me, I want it to be when you’re ready to let me have you. Otherwise, it’s better if I don’t know what I’m missing out on.”

Looking filled with remorse, she waved her hands. “Okay. I get it. I’m sorry…for interrupting.”

“Go back to bed. I’ll be right there.”

After Kendall left, I closed my eyes in regret. Was I crazy for turning her away like that?
Now that she knew what I was up to in here, I couldn’t relax. Still needing release like a motherfucker, I turned on the shower and got in. Ironically, I jerked myself to thoughts of her naked body against the bathroom door and imagined she was watching me.

Fuck my life.

Blog Tour: Lies You Tell by LaQuette

Lies You Tell

by

LaQuette

Blurb:

A mob boss finding his dead lover alive six years after her death, shocking.  Learning they’ve got a five-year-old son…deadly.

Six years ago Sanai Ward fled her life in Florida when her lover’s infidelity nearly brings her life to a fiery end.  Scared and devastated, Sanai starts over from nothing, determined to create a safe and happy life for the child she discovers she’s carrying.

Single parenthood isn’t easy. But the joy of watching her beloved Nazario thrive is more than enough motivation to ignore the ache in her heart for the man that shattered her soul.
Dante De Luca is a passionate man who’s had his life stolen from him.  Six years ago he was in love and happy, until his woman was killed in a fire. Sanai was gone.  There was nothing left in the ashes but the locket he’d placed around her neck.  Too angry to deal with his loss, Dante seeks to make the rest of the world pay for his broken heart by forming an unholy covenant with an unspeakable ally.  He knows he’ll live to regret it, but signing away your humanity to the devil seems meaningless when your soul is already gone.
When an accident involving a family member draws Dante to New York, and forces an unexpected meeting between he and Sanai, Dante has to decide what’s more important.  His rage and revenge, or the safety of the woman he once loved and the health of their son?
Just when Sanai’s deception is beginning to sting less, Dante is faced with the fallout of his own lies.  Will she forgive him?  Will they survive them, or will their lives become tragic casualties of the dangerous lies he told?

Excerpt:

She watched her son glance back and forth between the two men now sitting on either side of him. He was biting on his fingernails, a nervous habit he had developed when he began school. Sanai’s first instinct was to cross the room as quickly as she could and snatch her baby up.

Yeah, it was just hair, and it was already falling out from the chemotherapy, but her protective instincts weren’t exactly running off of logic.
This plan Dante had of cutting it all off sounded rational, but being rational wasn’t really high on her list of priorities. That was her baby, and if he wasn’t on board with the idea, she was shutting this entire plan down.
She moved to take a step in their direction, but Dante’s smile halted her. He wasn’t looking in her direction—probably had no idea she was watching him so intently. But the easy way he smiled at her son, the way Nazario mirrored Dante’s same crooked smile that spread slowly across his little mouth and lit up his entire face—the power of it held her in place.
Tony opened his bag. He pulled out a drape and shook out its folds. She saw Nazario stare at the drape with a bit of trepidation shaking his small frame. Tony lifted it in the air and placed it carefully around Dante’s neck.
Her eyes met Dante’s, silently asking for answers. Before she could form the words of her question, Tony turned on his clippers and took a quick pass up the side of Dante’s head. When he pulled the clippers back, she saw scalp, or more aptly described, scalp covered by a short fuzz.
She glanced back at her son. He  had a front-row seat of Dante getting his hair shaved off. Nazario stared at the man, his fear morphing into curiosity. Without so much as a word this man took the fear out of something for her child, making it something fun.
In a few minutes, those beautiful dark curls that were Dante’s signature were gone. When Tony was done with Dante, he cleaned him up, shook out the drape, and motioned for Naz to take Dante’s place.
The boy hesitated for just a minute and then settled into his chair. Tony secured the drape and turned the clippers on. Nazario jumped a little at the sound, but Dante calmed him down by leaning in front of him and giving him a thumbs-up. While Dante kept him distracted, Tony shaved the boy’s hair down to his scalp, and with what appeared to be practiced ease, he lined the boy’s edges up, making the haircut look less like they were attempting to cover up illness and more like a trendy haircut a young boy would wear.
Tony dusted off the excess hair from Naz and pulled off the drape. When those dark brown eyes she loved so much looked up with both excitement and approval, she pulled on a trembling smile. She walked up to him, running a gentle hand over his head.
“You look real good, Naz. Mr. Tony did a good job.” Her voice felt thick and heavy as she spoke. The little boy fell into her arms. She hugged him as tight as she could and lifted watery eyes to Dante and Tony. Too full to speak over the growing ball of emotion in her chest, she simply mouthed a silent thank you to them.
They each nodded, but it was the red rim around Dante’s eyes that pulled her attention. In their depths she found understanding. Her brain questioned briefly how Dante could know just how relieved she was to see a happy smile on her boy’s face.
It almost didn’t compute that someone else could fathom how much it would mean to her that her son looked less like a sick cancer patient and more like an average five-year-old. But when Dante’s watery gaze fastened on to hers, she realized something crucial. Dante was Nazario’s father. Not just in blood, but in every way possible.
Orchestrating this haircut to preempt the trauma of hair loss was something only a parent would recognize as necessary. Only a father would sacrifice his own healthy mane to make his son feel less afraid, less abnormal.
Sanai opened her free arm to Dante, inviting him into the embrace she and their son shared. He hesitated briefly, and she hated that he thought he had to. Truth was, there was no one else she could blame for that.
She’d done this. She kept her arm open, and he finally leaned in. He circled
them both with strong arms, and she lightly scraped her fingers against his
near-smooth scalp.
“Thank you,” she whispered in his ear. He didn’t speak. If he was experiencing the same emotional overload, she understood why. He simply tightened his hold and squeezed Sanai and Nazario closer to him.
Her annoying mind kept trying to bully its way into the moment, but she refused to allow it. She wasn’t going to worry about how right it felt to be in Dante’s arms, how protected she felt with his arms surrounding them. She wasn’t going to listen to the fear screaming in the back of her mind that Dante was getting too close too soon. She simply burrowed into his embrace and let her battle shield fall.

Lana is convinced that she lives in perfect harmony with her own carefully devised plan. And everything in her life seems to go as she intends it. A new city. A new job. New acquaintances. And most importantly: life without a man!

One autumn afternoon a dark-haired man enters her small shop. His arrogant demeanor and provoking character are more than irritating. She is perfectly aware that her reactions to Mr. Arrogant undermine her most important rule. Never mind! She’ll never see him again.

Will he disrupt her plan?

m eror cover

Excerpt

The shop door opens and I snap out of my thoughts. A dark-haired man comes in. His knee-length winter coat emphasizes his muscular figure, and his attitude and appearance suddenly dominate the entire space. Our eyes meet. He’s looking at me intensely, penetratingly, and for far too long.

I manage to regain my senses and greet him with a cut-and-dried salesperson’s greeting: “Hello. How may I help you?” He nods an acknowledgement, and only then looks away, proceeding in huge steps towards the shelves of men’s shoes, where he reaches out his hand. He takes a brown, high-top shoe which balances perfectly between the elegant, and casual style. It’s one of the latest models, which arrived in the shop several days ago, and my personal favourite.

Hmm… A nice choice.

I shake my head, feeling awkward as I realise that I’m following his every move. Moreover, I approve of his selection. I keep my hands busy by pointlessly replacing trinkets on my counter, and then smoothing out an already perfectly stacked heap of business cards.

“Where can I find this same model, only in black?” He asks me in a deep voice, without a trace of kindness. His indescribably masculine voice causes an unpleasantly-pleasant shudder in the lower part of my back. I raise my head and my eyes meet his. His dark irises rivet mine. We’re staring at each other, again for too long. I feel my dormant insides waking, reacting to him. My breathing is shallow, my heart beating fast.

The curiosity in his eyes is replaced by a raw male arrogance which says unequivocally: Another notch on the list of conquests! I detest male arrogance. It takes me a few moments to regain my composure, then I blink in confusion.

“So? Cat got your tongue?” He breaks the silence as he goes on watching me, arrogant and smug.

“Excuse me?”

“The shoe?” He waves the shoe right in front of my nose, reminding me of the question he asked a little while ago.

I take a deep breath, and purse my lips angrily at his impertinent act, before concentrating and answering coldly. “Over there, the same model is on display in black.”

“I wouldn’t have asked you if that were the case.” He goes on in his impertinent, arrogant style.

I don’t understand his behaviour, but I have no wish to argue. I stop in front of the shelf and look over the models. I frown because I do not succeed in finding what I’m looking for. I work alone, and I don’t understand what could have happened to the shoe. I’m certain that I didn’t move it, and I know for sure that it was there. I turn around the shop confusedly. And lo and behold! The shoe that Mr. Arrogant’s looking for sits among the women’s discounted sandals. I am not a frowner by nature, so I smile and bring him what he’s asked for, forgetting his ungallant behaviour.

I give him the shoe and raise my eyes. My smile freezes, I stop breathing, and my heart dances again to a quick rhythm when I meet his dark eyes. There’s no arrogance, he just examines me calmly. Blood is rushing through my veins, I feel like I’m burning, and all my nerve endings become terribly aware of his presence. He looks perfectly calm and controlled as he stares at me insistently, and without blinking. Then he looks down, lazily.

“That’s it. I mean, a suitable model. And colour. But not a suitable size.” He says, and the haughty smile returns to the corners of his lips.

Fed up with his manners, I snort. He laughs loudly, obviously amused by my reaction. Embarrassment overwhelms me, and I feel my cheeks burning. “So, what size do you need?” I ask curtly.

“Well, I need a 44.” He returns, imitating me. He smiles broadly. It seems that he is amusing himself at my expense. Nervously, I march to the back of the shop and find the required size.

“Here you are.” I say officially and hand him the right shoe.

He covers my fingers with his while taking the shoe from my hand. My skin burns. Strange, powerful vibrations shake my entire body. This accidental touch makes my heart beat madly, and my lungs wail for air. I take a deep breath, raise my eyes but remain breathless. He’s looking at me seductively. My reaction to him has not escaped his notice. It makes him so happy. That touch was no accident. The jerk! He did it on purpose!

I want to run away, as soon as possible, so I turn on my heel.

“I want to see the label with the product details.” He says.

I look at him over my shoulder, confused, then move to hand him the box, which he could easily have taken himself. I stand beside him patiently and wait as he reads very carefully.

“Is there a problem?” I ask.

“I’m just checking.”

“Checking what?”

“Whether they were made in China.” He says coldly, and then raises his eyes to mine.

Made in China? He thinks I sell fakes? What an asshole!

“We sell only Italian stuff.” I say sharply.

He smiles, his eyes fixed. “Oh, look at those claws. I hope you’re well paid.” He speaks in a voice which shows clearly that he doesn’t believe what I say.

He’s provoking me, goading me with his smile, his look, and with the way he addresses me. I count to ten, then frown, turning the box upside-down to show him the embossed label: Fatte in Italia.

“Made in Italy’s written on the box and inside the shoe as well.” I speak briskly.

He bends his head lightly, furrows his eyebrows and studies the inscription carefully, examining the letters devotedly and seriously. I lose patience because this seems to be going on for an age.

For God’s sake, it’s as if he were decoding hieroglyphics!

Author Bio

* Pure Fantasy is my debut novel and it is dedicated to the victims of domestic violence; but I will quote one of my reviewers: “It addresses an issue faced by many women throughout the world, and does so in a positive way.”

** I celebrate friendship and crazy families, caring men, love and romance with a little bit of erotic scenes just to spice it all up.

There’s no sex scene in every chapter.

***So, if you like sweet romance novels I could be a writer for you 🙂

Self-published since August 2015.

I write under the pen name M.Eror (and no, there is no spelling error in my name).
