Cover Reveal: AWAKENED: THE ORACLE CHRONICLES BOOK ONE

Secret lineage, a ruthless vampire, and forbidden love.

Willow Stevens dreams of stardom are eclipsed by the real nightmares of a sinister man haunting her dreams. Unbeknownst to her, Eli Walker, her hot but snobbish co-worker, may know the reason nightmares plague her, but their history shows he is more prone to reject her, than help her.

Then Willow passes out at work only to wake in Eli’s apartment. There she has her chance to learn more about her heritage. But, knowing why the vampire king stalks her doesn’t make the nightmares disappear. If anything, they become more real as she now faces off against a slew of creatures she’d always believed were myth.

That Eli is one of those creatures is just her luck. Secret witch guild or not, his natural ways are casting spells her heart can’t escape. As a Protector his only focus should be her safety. Anything else is forbidden. He plans to stay in task, but some women break a man, or tempt him to break the rules.

Can Eli keep Willow alive and safe from the vampires long enough for her to grow her own powers or will both cast aside rules for a reckless passion that will only lead to danger?

Fans of A Discovery of Witches will love the mix of magic, adventure and paranormal romance in the first book of the series THE ORACLE CHRONICLES from Moni Boyce.

EXCERPT

A couple minutes later, she followed him. Whatever he’d prepared smelled delicious. He moved around the kitchen unsure. She raised her eyebrows while she watched him. He caught the gesture and looked embarrassed. “Most of the time, I cheat and use magic so I can do something else. I haven’t manually cooked in a while.”

She looked at him wide-eyed, with her mouth gaped open. Even though he’d told her earlier, they were witches she still was having a hard time believing it. “You cook with magic, like they do in Harry Potter? That’s so cool. I know you told everyone not to use it, but just show me a little something. I won’t tell.” Awe and child-like wonder permeated her voice. “Cross my heart.” She made the sign of the cross over her heart.

“You heard everything didn’t you?” His eyebrow quirked upwards, daring her to lie.

She gave him a sheepish smile and looked away before she continued talking about magic, in the hopes he’d forget her listening to their conversation. “I would be the ultimate multi-tasker if I was a witch. Say ‘Abracadabra’ and make the food magically appear on the plate or something.” Willow was giddy with excitement.

Eli chuckled. “I’m not a wizard. I don’t say ‘Abracadabra.’” He shook his head.

His explanation confused her. “What does that mean? I thought wizard was a name for a male witch.”

He sighed and put down the pot he was holding. That comment appeared to get his undivided attention. “You watch too much television. First, regardless of gender, we’re known as witches, those of us that practice white magic. Warlocks are witches that practice black magic. Wizards are charlatans, posers. They don’t know magic, but are exceptional at trickery so they can give someone who doesn’t know any better the illusion they do.”

She digested the information he’d just given her.

“That’s why everyone went silent earlier when Matty referenced black magic, because none of you practice it?”

He nodded and picked up the pot of noodles. “Yes. Now may I finish making dinner?”

“So you’re not going to cook with magic?” She was expecting him to do tricks and wow her. Disappointment marred her brow, when he didn’t whip out a magic wand or say a spell.

“You just said so yourself, that you overheard me tell everyone magic is off limits.”

Her shoulders slumped in discontent and she pouted. “You can’t do even a tiny little spell?”

            “Nope.”

She rolled her eyes. “Great. A witch who can’t do any spells or magic.”

Eli looked offended. “I didn’t say I can’t do magic. I’m just unable to do any at this time.”

            “Uh, huh.”

He bristled at her disinterest and she had to hold back a sly grin. “Wizard.” She mumbled under her breath, knowing it would get a rise out of him.

“I’m not a wizard! I can do magic!”

If she lit a match and threw it at him, he would have gone up in flames he was fuming so hard.

“Whatever.” Maybe she’d just…

Sometimes the stories told to tourists are more than just clever marketing. Sometimes a dark truth is woven into their enticing lies
Sometimes a few drops of blood and an old woman with a tattoo gun can change a life forever.

And now a few reader questions answered…

From Felicia Steele: What got you inspired to become a writer?

I used to enjoy writing stories at school but never even considered writing as a career. About five years ago, I had a ‘what if?’ moment after my daughter had been playing with our sat nav and thought it would make a great story. The idea wouldn’t leave me and continued to grow in my head.  Then, after I read one of Stephen King’s fantastic books and followed it with a book that was selling in the millions but I thought was written terribly, I decided to give it a go  myself.

From Zoe O’Farrell: What is your Kryptonite?

Screenshot 2018-10-26 at 08.52.58In terms of writing, researching on the internet is my Kryptonite. I can start off looking for jobs that kept men at home during the WW2 and find myself, two hours later, looking at videos of ghosts caught on camera or funny cats and I’ve not written a word!

From Terry: My question…would you like another cousin hehe

I don’t know if I could handle another cousin like her – she is wonderfully unique! But I’m always open to suggestions. 😉

I hope you’ve enjoyed getting to know M.W. Brown as much as I have. Make sure you continue to follow her writing career.

Five Favourite Things with M.W. Brown

Welcome to Day 2 of Foster an Author 2018! Today I asked M.W. Brown to join me for a round of Five Favourites. Let’s sit back, relax and get to know more about our featured author!

Giveaway alert: Want to win a copy of M.W. Browns debut novel, Portraits in Flesh? Post a question for her in the comments for a chance to win! On Friday, 26 October, I’ll choose a winner. Good luck!

Favourite place to write

image003

The perfect view for writing.

My husband and I run our own business, so life is pretty hectic and I write whenever and wherever I can squeeze half an hour to myself. I always have a notepad in my bag.

This year on holiday our apartment had a beautiful balcony overlooking the sea and I loved writing there when the day was cooling down. The view was very inspiring.

Favourite muse

I have two muses—David Bowie and my cousin. If I need an idea, I tell my cousin the general theme or problem and all she has to say is one word and it sends me down a path I may not have thought of before. When writing I like to listen to music and, because of David Bowie’s diverse catalogue, I can usually find a song or album that fits in with the mood of my chapter/story/character and use that to help fine tune the mood.

Favourite way to celebrate writing “the end”

I don’t really have a way to celebrate but as soon as I’ve finished a piece, I send it off to my cousin to read and eagerly wait for her feedback.

The mysterious M.W. Brown 🙂

Favourite time of day to write

I usually end up writing late at night because of my busy schedule. There are fewer distractions and I don’t feel like I’m missing out on family time. I’ve written to the early hours of the morning on occasion.

Favourite way to relax

Reading a good book in a deep, hot, bubble bath.

Thanks to M.W. Brown for doing a round of Five Favourites with me. Don’t forget to post a question for her in the comments for a chance to win Portraits in Flesh! And make sure you stop by her website and get to know even more about the enigmatic author.  🙂

Happy reading!

Excerpt

This is what it’s like to be the odd girl out: you stand in a crowd, and everyone’s looking through you, past you, around you. Every smile you think is for you? It’s not. They don’t know you, they don’t know your story, but they can smell the curse on you, like a rotten perfume, and they know better than to brush up against you. Can’t risk it rubbing off on them. Of course, in a town like Meredith Falls, a small town that thought it was big, it could be that everyone here knew. That what they were laughing and whispering about was that girl, that Cait girl, didn’t you hear? Her father and sister were killed when she was nine years old, and now her mother’s a drunk and she’s a disaster. Don’t go close, you’ll get her on your shoes. But someone always came close. There was always someone willing to give it a shot, go for a spin, dare the roller coaster. Take a quick bump and grind in the darkest corners of a club, or an alley, or someone’s darkened bedroom, and then run back to their friends, laughing about how they made it with the town whore. Nah, that wasn’t fair. A whore charged. I was just fumbling after something that I wasn’t ever going to find, and reaching for something that approximated release in clumsy hands and whispered lies.

My Spring 2013 reading list

Image

No blossoms yet in Stockholm, but soon!

Spring has finally arrived in Stockholm, Sweden–the air is getting warmer, the ice on Brunnsviken has finally melted, I could actually go out without a thick scarf and hat on. You know what that means–now I get to tell you what books I plan on reading (or am already reading).

So what’s on the list this time? One oldie and lots of new books. 🙂

  • The Mating Rituals of the North American WASP by Lauren Lipton. Now, I read this book a few years ago and loved it. I was feeling nostalgic and decided to read it again.
  • The Husband Diet by Nancy Barone. Nancy is one of my fellow Matera brainstormers and this is one of the books we brainstormed together. Can’t wait to finally read it. I’ve preordered it. 🙂
  • Damocles by S.G. Redling. Sheila is another Matera brainstormer and Damocles is another book we all brainstormed. I loved the plot when she told us about it. I think this is going to be another hit like her previous novel, Flowertown. Different genre, complete different story but I’m sure it won’t disappoint.
  • The Lost Daughter by Mary Williams. Williams is an African-American woman who was adopted by actress Jane Fonda. The Lost Daughter is her memoir about growing up in Oakland in the 1970s and what brought her to the camp Fonda and then-husband Tom Hayden ran. It’s also a story about self-discovery and knowing when you can go home again.
  • Leftovers by Stella Newman. I loved Newman’s Pear Shaped--even when her main character was driving me crazy with being submissive to an emotionally-unavailable man. According to the back cover blurb, Leftovers is about friendship, love and enjoying what’s left on the table. I’ve already got it on my Kindle…soon I’ll dive in. 🙂
  • Hemlock Grove by Brian McGreevy. Every now and then, I need a dose of paranormal, and it looks like this time it will be the werewolves of Hemlock Grove who give me my dose. 🙂
  • Lessons in French by Hillary Reyl. Set in Paris in 1989, this is a story about a woman rediscovering Paris and her past. It’s also about what happens when life begins to spiral out of control. I can’t wait to dig into this one! 😀
  • Banker’s Death: Temptation in Florence #3 by Beate Boeker. Beate’s a fellow Matera brainstormer and, as I posted earlier, I love her sense of humor and her quirky cast of characters.
  • Z: A Novel of Zelda Fitzgerald by Theresa Anne Fowler. Having read so much by and inspired by  F.Scott, it’s great to finally find a novel about Zelda. This one is sure to be enthralling!
  • Woman on the Run by Lisa Marie Rice. Rice is the pseudonym for one my fellow Matera Brainstormers. She writes great romantic and erotic suspense and this is one of her books which I haven’t read yet. I think I will take this one with me to Copenhagen in a few weeks! 🙂

That’s it for now. I am anxious to get working on Maybe Baby again. I’m revising Chapter 7. Five more chapters to tighten and then I will feel ready to release it. 🙂

Happy reading (and writing)! 🙂
