Feed your Kindle for Thanksgiving

Thanksgiving is soon here and you know what that means: a houseful of wonderful but noisy relatives, overindulging on delicious and maybe just a tad bit too rich food, drunk uncles (and maybe aunts too), and the inevitable food coma. It’s also when–if you’re an extroverted introvert like me–you need to retreat for just a little while with a good book.

And since Thanksgiving (at least for me) marks the beginning of the holiday season, it’s also time to feed my Kindle with lots of holiday fiction and romance. I’ve already started scoping out a few.

Seven Days of Us by Francesca Hornak

Imagine being put under quarantine with your family for seven days…how claustrophobic would you become after a few days? That’s the premise of Francesca Hornak’s Seven Days of Us

And the blurb?

It’s Christmas, and the Birch family is gathering for the first time in years.

Olivia, the eldest daughter, has returned from treating an epidemic abroad and must go into quarantine for seven days. Her mother has decided it’s the perfect opportunity to spend some ‘special time’ together. Her youngest sister wholeheartedly disagrees. Her father isn’t allowed an opinion.

When no one can leave the house, seven days for the Birches feels like an eternity.

Especially when they’re all harbouring secrets. One of whom is about to come knocking at their door…

Sounds like fun, right? I picked this one up in paperback at Pocketshop here in Stockholm. I’m going to start reading it at the weekend, so there will be a review soon. 🙂

Someone to Trust by Mary Balogh

You know I am a sucker for Regency romance, so I’ve already 1-clicked Someone to Trust.

What’s it about?

During a rare white Christmas at Brambledean Court, the widow Elizabeth, Lady Overfield, defies convention by falling in love with a younger man in the latest novel in the Westcott series.

After her husband’s passing, Elizabeth Overfield decides that she must enter into another suitable marriage. That, however, is the last thing on her mind when she meets Colin Handrich, Lord Hodges, at the Westcott Christmas house party. She simply enjoys his company as they listen to carolers on Christmas Eve, walk home from church together on Christmas morning, and engage in a spirited snowball fight in the afternoon. Both are surprised when their sled topples them into a snowbank and they end up sharing an unexpected kiss. They know there is no question of any relationship between them, for she is nine years older than he.

They return to London the following Season, both committed to finding other, more suitable matches. Still they agree to share one waltz at each ball they attend. This innocuous agreement proves to be one that will topple their worlds, as each dance steadily ensnares them in a romance that forces the two to question what they are willing to sacrifice for love. . . .

That’s it for today, but I have the feeling I will be back soon with more holiday book suggestions. 🙂 What book will you sneak away to read during Thanksgiving?

“I’m going to enjoy this,” he told Brighton as she took one, two, three steps backwards toward the bed they shared every night. “But explain to me why you’re not naked like I asked?”

Brighton licked her lips, her eyes never leaving his body as he moved closer and closer to her, a sure sign that she was nervous.

“Well?” He took one final step, aligning their bodies so that he could feel the silky material of her negligee on his bare chest. He’d ripped his own shirt off as he’d entered the house, determined to have his wife once—hard and fast—so that he could enjoy her slower a little later on.

She was, after all, a woman to be enjoyed.

She shrugged, batting eyelashes at him like she thought he was susceptible to fluttering lids and mesmerizing green eyes. When he simply raised his eyebrows in a “well?” expression, she joined her hands with his and squeezed, offering a small smile that brought all of Sebastian’s plans to a screaming halt.

Something was wrong.

And he was going to find out exactly what it was.

“Brighton, I wanna know.” He tried to be gentle, but the words came out demanding. Shit. “I’m sorry. Please?”

“Just . . . well, you know.” Her eyes cast downward as she dropped one of his hands in favor of resting it on her still slightly-rounded belly. “I know you say you don’t care—”

“I don’t care. I’m not saying it. I mean it.” He felt the frown that skittered across his face before he worked to smooth it out. He didn’t want her to think he was angry at her, but he also didn’t want her thinking that she was anything less than perfect.

“I know. I just feel—I mean, it was strange getting naked without you here.” Using the hand that was still joined with his, Brighton pulled him even closer. Nothing, not even the smallest sliver of air, was between them but for the material of her cream-colored nightgown. “I like it when you undress me.”

Sebastian nodded and lowered his head so he could kiss her.

It started slow. They pressed and licked and stroked, the heat ratcheting up with every movement, and it wasn’t long before Brighton began to express her impatience.

There, that’s what I want, Sebastian thought, my wife needing me so badly, she forgets to worry.

He wasted no time in making sure she got what she needed from him. He let go of her hand, using both of his own to grip the hem of her negligee and begin the slow slide of silk up her body as she whimpered into their kiss, then moaned when he broke it to draw the material over her head.

Perfect. Her body was perfect. Soft and curved in all the right places and absolutely made for him to worship, which he didn’t hesitate in sharing with her. “I could touch this body every minute of every day, and it wouldn’t be enough.”

Review: A Winter’s Tale by Carrie Elks

Screen Shot 2017-09-17 at 12.32.47

A heartwarming, sexy and funny holiday romance.

What would you do if you’ve been trying to find an internship for ages but your shyness seems to get in the way? That’s Kitty Shakespeare’s predicament when, instead of an internship, she’s offered the chance to be a nanny over Christmas to the son of a hot (though notoriously difficult) Hollywood star. Not an ideal situation, but Kitty takes it and hopes it will help her get her foot in the door. What she isn’t counting on is totalling her rental car once she arrives in West Virginia. Luckily, a sexy but taciturn stranger comes to her rescue….he’s a bit of a jerk, but at least he gets her to her destination. That stranger turns out to be Adam Klein, documentary filmmaker and estranged brother of her employer. Yes, sparks are going to fly and you’ll love it.

A Winter’s Tale is the second story in the Shakespeare Sisters series and it’s a wonderful Christmas love story set in the Blue Ridge Mountains (which are beautifully described in the novel). When I was reading A Winter’s Tale, I forgot I was reading a book—I felt like I was immersed in one of my favourite Christmas movies. I loved it. I started picturing Tom Hardy as Adam Klein…yes, my imagination got the best of me. 🙂 It’s a great opposites attract story that’s heartwarming, funny and sexy at the same time.

I loved the scenes between Kitty and Annie, the housekeeper who keeps all the Klein family secrets, and little Jonas is such a sweetie you wish you could give him a hug through the pages. But the very rugged Adam Klein is deliciously sexy—yes, you’ll wish you could spend Christmas with him.

So should you read A Winter’s Tale? Absolutely! And will you love it? Yes, I am pretty sure you will! And even though A Winter’s Tale is the second book in the series, it reads like a standalone, so it’s okay if you haven’t read the first book (Summer’s Lease), but I think you’ll want to read it too.

My rating? Five stars, without a doubt.

EXCERPT

SUZY

“Never thought it would happen,” he whispers. His hand moves from my breast, up my neck, then finally rests on my jaw. He traces my lips with his fingers, and a delicious shiver runs down my spine. The pads are rough, but his touch is as light as a feather.

My heart melts.

“You never thought what would happen?”

His eyes roam my face as he makes me wait for his answer. The heat in them makes my breaths grow more shallow, and it feels as if every part of my being is singed from his fire.

“Never thought I’d find a woman who’d be able to pull me out of the darkness.”

I stop breathing for a moment. My eyes prickle as tears gather in them.

It’s so rare that he talks about his past now, that it always takes me by surprise when he mentions it.

His eyes stop their perusal as he touches his forehead to mine for a short moment.

“Never thought I’d be so lucky,” he murmurs.

My arms constrict around his neck.

“Never thought one woman’s smile would light me up from within like yours always does.”

“Please stop,” I whisper, my voice trembling from the love that I can feel touching my soul in his every word.

“My love.” His lips brush mine, and I lift my head, trying to deepen his kiss. He won’t have any of it, though. Both of his hands come down to frame my face, and his thumbs sweep my hair away, baring me completely before him. As always, I yield to his will, even though patience is the last thing on my mind right now.

“You’re going to make me bawl like a baby,” I sniffle, trying to smile.

He laughs low, the deep rumble that I love so dearly, but it’s gone as quickly as it started.

“I hope I’ll never stop being worthy of the love you have given me so freely.”

Even before he’s done talking, I shake my head.

“I promise – I swear – that’ll never happen, honey.”

Release Blitz: Christmas Candy by Celia Aaron

goodreads-badge.png
AP new - synopsis.jpg
A Christmas novella where everyone gets their just desserts.
Olive had a major crush on Hank in high school. She was the too-smart, slightly chubby girl who gawked as Hank ran track and made all the cheerleaders swoon. After high school, the two went their separate ways. Olive opened a yoga studio and swore off sweets while Hank traveled the world. No problem, right? At least there wasn’t a problem until Hank moved back to town and opened a candy shop across the street from Olive’s studio. Now, Olive will do everything she can to shut her old crush down. But Hank has other plans, and all of them end with an Olive sundae.

Author’s Note: This is a sweet Christmas treat that will leave you satisfied, yet desperate for a little taste of sugar.

“Can you call that number again, dear?” Mrs. Carmichael adjusts her enormous bifocals. “I couldn’t hear it over my cats. They meow something terrible when they’re hungry.”I glance around at the cat-free common room. “Sure. I-14.”

“Thank you.” She stares at her upside down bingo card.

“I wanted to ask you something last night, but I couldn’t quite work up the nerve.” His fingers linger against mine again as he hands me the next ball.

“What?” My voice comes out breathy as I call out the number. We should have had a bingo by now, but I’ve learned everything takes a little longer at the senior center.

He leans over, his warm breath tickling my ear.

“I was wondering what your favorite candy is.”

Goosebumps break out along my neck and arms as I snatch the ball from his hands and announce the next number.

“I don’t like candy.” I glance at him. He’s watching me, eating me up with his eyes. Problem is, I can’t say the sensation is unpleasant. Quite the opposite.

“Come on. Everyone likes candy.”

“I don’t.” His nearness is throwing me off, and I stutter out the next number.

“You sure? I saw the way you looked at my candy apple.”

I huff out a breath. “I don’t know what you’re talking about.”

He moves closer, our arms touching. “Don’t worry. I won’t tell anyone.” His conciliatory whisper has my heart stutter-stepping. “You look beautiful, by the way.”

I can’t focus on the numbers, not when he’s winding me up like a clock. It doesn’t help that this is the most distracted I’ve been over a man since … Since senior year when I stared at him running track instead of doing my homework. I’ve fallen into the same hole with the same guy, and I can’t seem to get myself free.

“Candy apples.” I keep my voice low.

“What?” God, his voice in my ear sends shivers shooting down my spine.

“I like candy apples the best.”

“I’d like to see you eat one of my candy apples. Extra caramel for you.” He hands me the next ball, his index finger skating along mine. “Something sweet on your tongue.”

My body goes up in flames as our eyes meet, and I call out, “O-69.”

My Review

I love holiday-themed stories, so when I was asked if I’d like to review Celia Aaron’s Christmas Candy, I jumped at the chance. I’d heard good things about her writing style and I thought I’d give it a shot.

Christmas Candy tells the story of what happens when former chubby girl turned yoga instructor Olive is faced with the return of her former crush, Hank–who’s opened a candy shop directly across the street from her yoga studio. Olive is hell bent on trying to close down Hank’s shop, but he’s got other ideas…

Christmas Candy is a fun, quick Christmas read that has great comedic timing and amusing characters . I really liked how Olive and Hank’s chemistry and the snarky, sexy banter between them. This is one of those stories that will have you giggling along with it. So if you like Christmas romances, and you want a quick read with a sexy, snarky but fun feel, then you should definitely read Christmas Candy!

More holiday reads to check out!

Yes, it’s the third Sunday of Advent and here in Sweden it’s Saint Lucy’s Day, which pretty much marks the beginning of Christmas here.

I love Christmas and I love reading novels set during the holiday season. So let’s continue with more books you can read to help you get in the spirit! 🙂

ChristmasWishesJenny Hale‘s latest, Christmas Wishes and Mistletoe Kisses, sounds like my cuppa tea!

An uplifting, beautiful story about never letting go of your dreams, the special magic of a family Christmas… and the rush of falling in love under the mistletoe.
Single mother Abbey Fuller loves her family more than anything, and doesn’t regret for a moment having had to put her dreams of being an interior designer on hold. But with her son, Max, growing up, when a friend recommends her for a small design job she jumps at the chance. How hard can it be?

Nick Sinclair needs his house decorated in time for his family’s festive visit – and money is no object. What he doesn’t need is to be distracted from his multi-million dollar business – even if it is Christmas.

When Abbey pulls up to the huge Sinclair mansion, she has a feeling she might be out of her depth. And when she meets the gorgeous, brooding Nicholas Sinclair, she knows that she’s in real trouble…

With the snow falling all around, can Abbey take the chance to make her dreams of being a designer come true? And can she help Nick to finally enjoy the magic of Christmas?

Now, I read the Christmas Tree Guy by Railyn Stone last Christmas, but I think I’ll be re-reading it this year. 🙂

XmasTreeGuySydnee Garrett has a lot on her to-do list. Wrangle her young and rambunctious twin boys. Check. Get her life back in order since her husband decided to leave her for a much younger woman. Check. And buy a Christmas tree. Check.

What she wasn’t expecting was adding one more thing to her list. A young, sexy personal trainer. Check.

Quinn Masters is a man who knows what he wants and doesn’t take no for an answer. He isn’t fazed by age or race differences and he does everything in his power to win Sydnee over.

Will Sydnee continue to fight for her orderly life or welcome in the chaos that’s threatening to change her entire world?

BurningBrightThis year was the first time I ever saw romances set during Chanukah. Now, I think today is the last day of Chanukah, but that doesn’t mean we can’t still fall in love, right? 🙂  I think k I’ll be checking out Burning Bright.

This December, take a break from dreidel spinning, gelt winning, and latke eating to experience the joy of Chanukah. When you fall in love during the Festival of Lights, the world burns a whole lot brighter.

It’s definitely not love at first sight for Amanda and her cute but mysterious new neighbor, Ben. Can a Chanukah miracle show them that getting off on the wrong foot doesn’t mean they can’t walk the same road?

Lawyers in love, Shari Cohen and Evan Sonntag are happy together. But in a moment of doubt, he pushes her away—then soon realizes he made a huge mistake. To win her back, it might take something like a Chanukah miracle.

When impulsive interior designer Molly Baker-Stein barges into Jon Adelman’s apartment and his life intent on planning the best Chanukah party their building has ever seen, neither expects that together they just might discover a Home for Chanukah.

All Tamar expected from her Israel vacation was time to hang out with one of her besties and to act like a tourist, cheesy t-shirt and all, in her two favorite cities. She definitely was not expecting to fall for Avi, a handsome soldier who’s more than she ever dreamed.

41A2YaB8RIL._SX311_BO1,204,203,200_I really like the sound of Lit Up by Devyn Morgan–two men falling in love and dealing with their religious differences. Could be fun! Adding it to my Kindle queue. 🙂

Has a fateful November meeting over raspberries led Rusty to Mr. Right? He and Cole have so much in common, except for that religious background thing.

And Cole loves holidays. Rusty decks out Christmas trees, while Cole lights up menorahs. It can’t be that hard to plan and execute the perfect Chanukah. What could possibly go wrong?

Two men, two sets of traditions, one chance for Rusty to get it right.

Exactly what do you do with a dreidel?

Lit Up is a standalone M/M romance with an HEA.

Still need more! Keep checking in! I’ll be bringing you more of my favorite finds for holiday reads! 🙂

Happy reading!

My Christmas reading list

I love to escape into a good book. I think everyone who knows me is well aware of this fact. Sometimes I prefer books to people. This is especially true during the Christmas season. Usually, it’s a pretty stressful time at work and I just want to relax…but then there are all those Christmas things you have to do–like mingles and shopping and meeting family (which is not bad, though sometimes there are those who try your patience). That’s why I always have a book with me–you never know when you need a few minutes to yourself to simply…escape.

And I love holiday love stories. Yes, I am kitschy like that. It doesn’t even need to be a romance, as long as people are falling in love and there’s a little snow and maybe even mistletoe, well that makes me happy. So here are some of titles I’ve already 1-clicked for my Kindle. Maybe they’ll whet your holiday romance appetite.

Wrapped-in-Red-slider1-280x376Wrapped in Red by Mika Jolie

Christmas is a time to be merry and bright. For Minka Montgomery, it’s anything but.

While Martha’s Vineyard bursts with festive lights and good cheer, a black shadow parades around and within Minka. With her Christmas spirit conspicuously absent, her marriage to Jason Montgomery has snowballed and is spiraling out of control. The weight of motherhood – and her new role as a wife – presses on her shoulders. Self-doubt creeps in and swiftly turns to hopelessness.
As her anxiety level rises, can she share what’s in her heart with her husband? Is there a branch of hope to hold on to? With Christmas only twelve days away, can she find her Christmas spirit and rediscover the true meaning of the season?

winters-tale-english-5.previewWinter’s Tale by Mark Helprin

Set in New York at the beginning and the end of the twentieth century, Winter´s Tale unfolds with such great narrative force and beauty that a reader can feel that its world is more real than his own. Standing alone on the page before the book begins are the words, I have been to another world, and come back. Listen to me. In that world, both winter and the city of New York (old and new) have the strength and character of protagonists, and the protagonists themselves move as if in a vivid dream. Though immensely complicated, the story is centered upon Peter Lake, a turn-of-the-century Irish burglar, and Beverly Penn, a young heiress whom he encounters in robbing her house, and who eventually will die young and in his arms. His love for her, and a gift of grace, will allow him after the most extraordinary and painful explorations and discoveries to stop time and bring back the dead. To follow him, his predecessors, his inheritors, and his companions is to experience one of the great stories of American literature.

comfort_and_joyComfort and Joy by Kristin Hannah

An oldie but still a goodie!

In this modern-day fairy tale, New York Times bestselling author Kristin Hannah gives us a very special gift: the heartwarming story of a woman at a crossroads, caught between two lives, who finds a second chance at happiness.

Joy Candellaro used to love Christmas more than any other time of the year. Now, as the holiday approaches, she finds herself at loose ends. Recently divorced and estranged from her sister, she can’t summon the old enthusiasm for celebrating. So without telling anyone, she buys a ticket and boards a plane bound for the rural Northwest.

Yet Joy’s best-laid plans go terribly awry. The plane crashes deep in the darkness of a forest. Miraculously, Joy and her fellow passengers walk away from the wreckage as the plane explodes. There, amid the towering trees, Joy makes a bold and desperate decision to leave her ordinary life behind and embark on an adventure…just for the holidays.

Daniel O’Shea has returned to the small town of Rain Valley, following the death of his ex-wife. Now he is a single father facing his son’s first Christmas without a mother. Six-year-old Bobby isn’t making it easy-the boy has closed himself off from the world, surrounding himself with imaginary friends.

When Joy and Bobby meet, they form an instant bond. Thrown together by fate, these wounded souls will be touched by the true spirit of Christmas and remember what it means to be a family.

Then a dramatic turn of events shows Joy the price of starting over. On a magical Christmas Eve she will come face-to-face with a startling truth. Now she must decide: In a time of impossible dreams and unexpected chances, can she find the faith to reach for the love she has found…and the new life only she believes in?
