Every now and then I do something that I think only we book nerds appreciate–rereading favorite books. Some books I reread once a year, like Jane Austen’s Pride and Prejudice or E.M. Forster’s A Room with a View. Other books creep up on me and whisper tantalizingly in my ear, “You know you want to read me again…c’mon…get lost in me one more time.” And who am I to resist that siren song?
So over the last few weeks I’ve been rereading three books. I finished two and now I am onto the third book. So which books are these? Nia Forrester’s Afterwards and Afterburn, and Diana Gabaldon’s Cross Stitch (the first book in the Outlander series).
Nia Forrester has quickly become one of my favorite women’s fiction authors. She writes about African-American characters who defy stereotypes, which I really appreciate, and she knows how to keep the chemistry between her characters piping hot in just the right way.
And even though I am not very big on alpha male type characters (I often find them to be jerks and I don’t understand why the women in the books are even attracted to them), I liked how Nia gave us enough of Chris’s backstory that we understand why he is so demanding and a tad bit controlling. He’s not my favorite character, but he deserves his happily ever after.
And then of course, we have Diana Gabaldon’s Cross Stitch (or Outlander as the first book is called in the US). I first read this novel many, many years ago and was hooked. Granted, I did avoid it at first because I usually avoid anything that gets hyped a lot in the media. When I finally gave in and read it, I fell in love. What’s not to love? Time travel, hot men in kilts, Scotland….a gorgeous love story…? Yeah, I was hooked. And now when Starz has produced a series based on the books, which premieres next week, well I had to reread the first book and fall in love again.
So now I am waiting patiently…(actually, I am lying–I am being very impatient and sending HBO Nordic lots of mail wondering if they are going to show Outlander ASAP) for the series to air on Swedish TV. HBO Nordic has signed an agreement with Starz to broadcast their shows here in Scandinavia. So…does this mean they’ll #putakiltonit and show Outlander…like…NOW? 🙂
So what about you? Are you rereading any of your favorite books?
