Sometimes I can’t help myself even when I know I should resist–yes, resist the urge to buy more books. I am a bookaholic. I read too much–or, at least, some people think I do. When I was a kid, my parents both loved and hated that I read so much. They were happy that I was doing something I loved but also a bit bemused that their middle child would rather read than hang out with her friends. Such was my lot. Anyway, today after attending a Friday Writers’ Lunch–my first in ages since I have had way too much to do at work to attend lately–I took a gander into Akademibokhandeln on Odenplan and was pleasantly surprised to find some new (or new for me) women’s fiction titles. I ended up buying all four. Actually, I am not sure if one of them counts as women’s fiction but I liked the backcover blurb so it too is on my to-read list, which is growing longer and longer. So what did I buy?
Backcover blurb: “It’s the day Anna’s always dreamed of: The Love of her Life is at the altar, about to say ‘I do’. But that’s where the dream ends, because although he’s The One, he’s about to become another woman’s husband. Or is he…?”
Backcover blurb (condensed since it was very, very long): “Rory Carmichael is single for the first time in her adult life. In an effort to reinvigorate both her love life and her lacklustre career at posh magazine Country House, she sets herself a mission to date as many unsuitable men as possible. Maybe the bad boys she’s never dated can show her what she’s been missing in her life. But if Mr. Right can turn out to be so wrong, maybe one of her Mr. Wrongs will turn out to be just right…”
Info from Amazon (way too long backcover blurb): “Lucky Quinn writes up weddings for one of the hottest bridal magazines. And it wasn’t easy to get there. From humble beginnings, she outsmarted her way into the center of New York’s glamorous magazine industry – making up for her background with a sharp mind, whip-thin physique, and ceaseless ambition.
Then, in one day, her life is utterly transformed; two of the magazine’s major competitors fold, and Lucky is named Editor-in-Chief, replacing the formidable, but aging Grace Ralston, who had been at the magazine’s helm from day one. Grace taught Lucky everything she knows, but now it seems that she taught her too well…
As the ripples of Lucky’s promotion spread, the intricate lives of four women begin to unfold. Felice, Your Wedding’s elegant and unshakeable Art Director is now being shaken for the first time by troubles at home. Sara, the Fashion Director, is famed for her eagle eye for fashion trends and exquisite hair. But, for all her know-how, “the Angel of Bridal” has never come close to starring in a wedding herself – she’s picked the dress, but where’s the groom? Grace, recovering in the wake of her sudden, humiliating fall from power, must learn to accept herself – and love – after a life dedicated to fulfilling other women’s dreams. And, through it all, Lucky begins to discover just how lonely the top really is.”
Backcover blurb (condensed, again): “It’s 1999 and the Internet is still a novelty. Lincoln, a shy IT guy responsible for monitoring emails at a newspaper office, spends his hours reading every exchange between Beth and Jennifer, who discuss the trials and tribulations of their lives. At first, their emails are a welcome diversion for Lincoln but then he realizes he is falling in love with one of them. By the time he realizes just how crazy he is about her, it’s too late to introduce himself. After a series of close encounters, Lincoln eventually decides he must follow his heard and find out if there is such a thing as love before first sight.”
So that’s it for today. I am in the midst of a 1K/1hr sprint with Liz and Lizzy so I need to get back to work! 😀
