A few weeks ago something wonderful happened. My colleague Pär and I happened to be talking about books and he told me about a books some friends of his had written. He asked me if read books in Swedish and, when I said yes, he said, “You have to read this book. It’s fantastic.” Then one day he showed up at work with the book in question, Cirkeln by Mats Strandberg and Sara Bergmark Elfgren.
Now for those of you not familiar with the Swedish book market, Cirkeln is one of the hottest books around. It’s a smart YA novel about six teenage girls living in a town on the decline. Doesn’t sound interesting? Well, add to the mix that one night in the light of a blood moon these girls are all drawn to an abandoned amusement park and discover they are witches. And then add to mix that there’s someone…or something…trying to prevent them from developing their powers. And that someone is willing to kill them to make sure it never happens…and the girls learn that they cannot survive if they don’t stick together…and did I mention the coming of the Apocalypse?
Interested? I know I was. Cirkeln has a tight plot, well-written scenes with a cinematic feel and good character development. If I were the sort who gave out stars, I would give this book a 5-star review. Unfortunately for those of you who can’t read Swedish, Cirkeln isn’t available yet in English but I doubt it will take long until it is… and it’s the first book in a trilogy so I think this is going to be a very long love story for me. 🙂
And that lovely cover, Pär, you rock! 😀
