I found this article, Be a better reader in 2011, on salon.com and it got me thinking that I really do need to break out of my reading comfort zone.
Lately, I’ve been reading the same sort of books–mostly because I have felt like I couldn’t be bothered with trying something new that I might not like. A little of it is due to having been ill and not having had the energy to seek out anything new.
So now I think it’s time for me to set aside my usual rom-coms and thrillers and doses of literary fiction and read something that might feel like a slap upside my head. I’m thinking I should try speculative fiction. I read an article on io9.com with some recommendations so I will probably try a few titles.
I hardly ever read biographies but maybe I shoudl give in and read one or two this year. No, I won’t be reading anything “penned” by Sarah Palin or George W. Bush. That’s just way too far out of my reading comfort zone, thank you very much. And I suspect it’s stll fiction and not nonfiction no matter what genre the publisher swears it belongs to.
What about the rest of you? How will you become a better reader in 2011? How will you step out of your reading comfort zone?
